Trump celebrates the cancellation of Tom Hanks' military award for being "woke"

US President Donald Trump celebrated on Monday the cancellation of the recognition ceremony that the West Point military academy was going to offer to actor Tom Hanks, considering it "destructive and 'woke'."
"Our great West Point (and it keeps getting better!) has wisely decided to cancel the Awards Ceremony for actor Tom Hanks. An important step! We don't need destructive, 'WOKE' recipients receiving our beloved American Awards!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social network.
Hanks was set to receive the prestigious Sylvanus Thayer Award, given to an "outstanding citizen" who, while not attending West Point , has a distinguished record of service consistent with the military academy's values and ideals.
An event to present the award was scheduled for September 25, according to The Washington Post , which first reported the cancellation.
Retired Army Col. Mark Bieger, president and CEO of the West Point Alumni Association, who announced the decision in an email, did not specify whether the award had been revoked or if it would be given at a later date.
In June, when the award was announced, the Academy recognized the actor for his work and his care for veterans.
"Tom Hanks has done more for the positive representation of the American military, more for the care of veterans, their caregivers, and their families, and more for the American space program and all branches of government than many other American citizens," the academy said in a statement.
They also highlighted Hanks' portrayal of the American military in some of his works such as Saving Private Ryan , Forrest Gump and Greyhound , among others.
The actor is a well-known Democratic supporter and publicly supported former President Joe Biden during the 2020 election campaign and Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
